Population of India: An asset or a Liability?

China has a population of 1.388 Billion people and India has a population of 1.326 Billion people. But there are many people who consider population density, and not absolute population as a measuring scale.Even on that scale, Macau(China) has a very high number and India ranks at number 33 on the same list.
So what exactly is the problem with the population of India? It has been 70 years since India gained independence from the British empire. They left us with practically nothing. In the past 70 years, India has progressed considerably and is at it's peak speed to progress. There are numerous achievements of India, which can be highlighted to prove the same. But there is one question that still prevails. Why has India failed to be classified as a developed nation?

India houses brilliant minds such as Mukesh Ambani, alert ones such as Binny Bansal and even scientific minds like late Dr APJ Abdul Kalam. Even then, India has not progressed. The reason is that we always look at only one side of the coin. There is another one too which is equally important. India also houses numerous poor people; in fact, 22% of Indians are below the poverty line. This means that they cannot afford to fulfill their basic expenses. A country becomes rich when it's poor are rich.

According to google, the words asset and liability are defined as follows.

Asset: a useful or valuable thing or person.
Liability: a person or thing whose presence or behavior is likely to put one at a disadvantage.

Now, the population of India is clearly a liability on the Government of India. They are spending huge, impossible seaming figures on these people who are unable to contribute to the nation in any way. If things go on as they are, it is highly unlikely that these people will ever be able to contribute to the nation. They are just an expense on the Government Treasury, needing subsidies for anything and everything. They will never be able to contribute to the treasury, invite foreign investment, or serve the nation in any manner. This is the very definition of a liability.

Meanwhile in China, the population is an asset. By providing cheap and good quality labor to the developed nations looking for the same, China has ensured to put all of their workforce to use and earns a fortune with their help. This same money seems very small to the developed nations, who would, otherwise, have to spend much more than this on the same job. Every citizen of China contributes to the nation at some point of time.
This is why China is growing much more rapidly than India. It is high time we stop closing our eyes to the truth. We must face the reality, however harsh, and make a genuine attempt to improve our situation.
